Adding just 2–10 kg of dry sodium sulfite per tonne of thermomechanical pulp (TMP) can increase tensile strength by 10–15%. This improvement is achieved through partial lignin dissolution, which softens the fibers and allows them to elongate more effectively during refining. The result is longer, more flexible fibers that bond more efficiently, contributing to stronger final paper products.
